I see Patriotism as a
belief, and therefore every human being has a right to agree or
disagree with it. However this short essay discusses the sights
which I observed in the years after the World Trade Center fell.
Within a week, millions of Americans
began attaching flags to their cars, their homes, and property.
While I don't dispute their beliefs, I wonder where the patriotism was
in August of 2001. Was everyone suddenly proud of America?
Or were they simply following trends as so often happens in societies.

Secondly
I noticed the roadside littered with the discarded American
flags. Ironically the same auto drivers who felt so proud to have
an American flag on their car, would be shocked at the sight of the
same flag lying in the gutter after it was blown off of the car by it's
speed.
Americans have a great deal to be proud of, but ironically
the true treasures of this country have more often been retained by
the hard work of groups who appose government policy. Notable exceptions
are President Roosevelt's preservation of Yellowstone National Park.

Individuals such Tim Calvert (shown on his custom bike)
these are obviously not commonly elected to public office, yet they
are mainly responsible for the natural beauty which has remained the
heritage of our citizens.

Meanwhile
individuals such as this are considered 'normal' within American
society. While they may live their entire lives in ignorance of
'those others,' they certainly feel happy when they are able to enjoy
the fruits of our efforts.
